It is common to use a full set of clothing, including under garments, socks or stockings, and sometime even shoes if so desired.  It is a personal choice the clothing you decide for your loved one to be laid to rest in.  Traditionally formal wear has prevailed but it is not essential, the most important is that you choose clothing you believe your loved one would be comfortable in.
