Obituary for Helen Elizabeth O'Connor

O’ CONNOR, Helen - On January 13, 2015 in Newmarket, Ontario. Helen completed her journey through a long and wonderful life which began in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan on January 9th 1916. Predeceased in September, 1995 by her loving husband and Olympic athlete Lawrence "Larry" Gerard O’Connor. Dear mother of Larry Jr and his wife Gail of Keswick, Jane and her husband Don of Sarnia, Tom and his wife Linda of Victoria. She was so proud of her seven grandchildren: Tim, Katie, Michael, Jeffrey, Heather, Joanne and Ricky and 10 great grandchildren.
Helen is the daughter of the late Charles Worrell and Jennie Elizabeth Conway. She was raised in Huntsville, Ontario where her family was involved in the tanning business and built and operated Bigwin Inn. Helen had a lifelong love of Muskoka, and especially her cottage on Lake Vernon where the family would gather. She graduated from the University of Toronto in 1937 with an Honours Degree in Household Economics. Helen worked before marriage for the Ontario Government in the Department of Public Health, Laboratory Service in Toronto. Helen then spent most of her life in Chatham Ontario where she was an active community volunteer, gardener, reader, and bridge player. She loved her home where her kitchen was her domain.
She is also survived by her sister Barbara Mills of Toronto and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her grandson Ricky (1988) and brother Abbott (2001).
A Funeral Service will be held at Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home, 157 Main Street South, Newmarket on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 11am with visitation an hour prior. The internment will be held on Friday, January 16, 2015 at St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Chatham Ontario at 1pm.
