Obituary for John Weldon Rogers

“Jake” John Weldon Rogers died peacefully April 14, 2015. Husband of late Sheilah Rogers (nee Semple), father of Kelly Mistruzzi (John) and John McRogers (Jo-Ann). Loving Papa to Luke (Rebecca), Nika (Steven), Jesse, Jack and Jerri. Great Papa to Henry Finn Mistruzzi. Son of Geraldine and Weldon Rogers, survived by his sister Joan Sorokan (Steve). Graduate of Port Credit High School (awarded a gold watch for not missing a day of school until grade ten), part of the wonderful T55 gang at U of T, eventually earning his Masters of Education. Jake’s own journey as an educator started in the gym, progressed to curriculum consultant, included many summers heading the Principals’ Course, and culminated as Provincial Attendance Counsellor. He thrived in all these rolls but always felt the best years were those he spent with students and the thousands of athletes he coached in every sport going. Jake married his OAO in ’57 and family life on Overbank was established. Together they made dear friends on every step of their journey: Don Mills, Oregon, Stratford, New Hamburg, Sanlan, as well as, in their travels. Jake continued to win hearts right down the stretch, at Amica and recently at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket.

There once was a teacher, friend and Dad
Everyone who knew him was glad
Though his day is done
The man was fun
And that’s why this news ain’t so sad.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, April 26 at Hart House, U of T, Debates Room, beginning at 1 p.m. Bring your limerick! If desired, donations in memory of Jake can be made to the Parkinson’s Society or Right to Play Canada. Online condolences may be made at www.roadhouseandrose.com
