Obituary for Elizabeth Gillam Macken (Gillam)

Elizabeth Gillam Macken (Gillam)
Elizabeth Gillam Macken
May 1, 1926 to August 31, 2016

With deep sadness, we announce the sudden yet peaceful passing of Libby Macken. Her husband of 66 years, Brendan, was by her side, as were her 4 daughters Nancy (Ted Walker (deceased)), Ginny (Cam Ross), Peggy (Mark Roszell), and Helen (Roger Conzelmann). Mom has gone to be with her beloved son Bren Jr., who passed away 11 years ago. She was a loving Gran to Lindsay (Sam), Courtney (Kemp), Patrick (Taryn), Sean, Carly, Jeff, Maddie, and Nicole. Proud great-grandma of Alice and Robbie. She was so happy she got a chance to hold those babies in her arms.

Libby was born May 1st, 1926 to Simon and Helen Gillam in Merchantville, NJ, little sister to brothers Bill, Ed and Joe (all deceased). From kindergarten through high school in Merchantville she met many who would become life long friends. While attending the College of William & Mary, in Williamsburg, VA, she met the love of her life, Brendan, a tennis player from Montreal, QC. They graduated together in 1948, were married in 1950 and soon began raising a family. It was a leap of faith for the small town New Jersey girl to move to Canada but soon there was a house full of children, laughter and love. In 1966, Bren and Libby relocated to Thornhill, ON and made many more life long friends through neighbours, their bridge group, and tennis (although Mom never really played). After a few years in Richmond Hill, ON they were finally ready to downsize, which brought them to their wonderful condo in Aurora, ON. This year was their 6th summer in the condo and again they made many great new friends and loved when the neighbours would stop by their patio to chat.

In her 91st year, Libby enjoyed doing the daily crossword puzzles, following the Blue Jays and the Raptors, and checking her standings in the local golf pool, where she was ahead of both her husband and her sons-in-law. She will forever be in the hearts of her loving husband, her children and spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews throughout Canada and the United States.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, Sept. 25th, 2016 at St. Andrew's Valley Golf Club, 4 Pinnacle Trail, Aurora, Ontario from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm with tributes to begin at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Southlake Regional Health Centre southlakeregional.org
