Obituary for Don Mitanoff

Don Mitanoff
Don Mitanoff died peacefully at the Margaret Bahen Hospice in Newmarket, on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 70 years of age. He is loved and missed by Lynn, his wife of 30 years, his children Valerie, Andrew and Nick and his beautiful grand-daughter Alexandria (he called her Dria; she called him “Dedo”). Don was the beloved son of the late Diana Mitanoff. Family meant everything to him. Also mourned by his and Lynn’s large extended families, his colleagues, his students, his best friends Claudius & Norbert and his Church family.
Don was a York Region School Teacher for over 40 years, the last 15 being at MAPS (Mount Albert Public School). He loved his job; he loved his students! His degree was in Math & History, but his passion was instrumental music. He loved to play his accordion. He was extremely proud of the many bands that he conducted over the years and he was the inspiration for several of his students to become Music teachers. Don was the 2017 Chair of the Board for Sharon Hope United Church. He sang in the Celebration Choir there. He was committed to the well-being of the Church and its congregation.
Don also loved food (and ouzo) and he was a great cook. He loved to make his Mom’s Macedonian recipes and has passed them down to his children. He loved to travel, camp, and go to Florida with the kids. He made a pilgrimage to the old country at retirement. He cruised with Lynn the last few years.
Friends may call at the Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home, 157 Main St. S., Newmarket on Friday February 2, 2018 from 4-8 pm. Funeral Service on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 1pm, at Sharon Hope United Church, 18648 Leslie Street, Sharon.
Thank you to all the caring and compassionate Caregivers to Don over the course of his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations to Sharon Hope United Church would be appreciated by the family.
