Obituary for Earnest (Ernie) Villamere

Following his 87th birthday at Sunrise Senior Living in Aurora, Earnest (Ernie) Villamere, a kind and gentle giant, passed away in the comfort of his loving wife, Mary, on Wednesday, August 18, 2021.

Ernie was born on August 9, 1934, in Renfrew, Ontario, and married Mary on May 14, 1966. Ernie was a loving and devoted father to Catherine (predeceased), Edmond (Gillian), Daniel (Debbie) and Matthew (Karen). Proud grandfather to Benjamin and Nathan. Son of Jack and Agnes Villamere, loving brother to Linda (predeceased), Colleen and husband Art (predeceased) and his nieces and nephews, Jim (Louise), Maureen (predeceased), Andy (Laura) and Jennifer (Tim) and their families.

Ernie and Mary were married for 55 years and moved from Toronto to Montreal in 1971. They made Montreal their family home for 16 years before returning to Ontario in 1987, settling in Mississauga.

Ernie graduated from St. Michael’s College in Toronto and had a long and storied career in advertising when, in 1970, after 15 years in the business, he was appointed Vice-President and Media Director at Spitzer, Mills and Bates. Ernie was a dedicated and hardworking professional and continued to hold executive roles in the advertising industry, retiring from Pattison Outdoor Advertising in 2014 at 80 years old.

Apart from the love of his life, Mary, and his family, Ernie’s greatest love was for the outdoors, and with his family, he spent as much time as possible camping, hunting, fishing, and enjoying being in the bush. Ernie passed this love on to his children and grandchildren, and his happiest moments can be seen either hunting or fishing at the “Camp” with his friends and family or when he was in the presence of his grandsons.

Ernie was a devoted family man with a quick wit and deep sense of caring for all who knew him. A man of tremendous character, he will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, Big Ern.
