Obituary for Dorothy Lorrayne Fry
Dorothy “Dody” Lorrayne Fry was born June 27th, 1929 in Toronto Ont. She attended high school in Timmins Ont. After university she moved to Aurora at the age of 26 & started her family. She raised three children & lived the rest of her life in the Aurora community. She passed away peacefully on October 29th, 2020 at the age of 91. She was physically in remarkable health, but sadly the horrid disease of Alzheimer’s robbed her of all willingness to live any longer.
Dody lost her father, Frederick Fry to complications from Malaria when she was two years old. Her mom, Katherine Maria (Kit) Fry - Beadman (nee Horlock) for most of Dody’s early life was a single mother & worked relying on Dody’s older siblings Robert (Bob) Fry, Edward (Ted) Fry & Kathleen (Kay) Henderson - Cross to help. As a young girl Dody spent summers with her sister Kay & husband Russ in their cabin near Virginiatown, Ont. swimming, canoeing & annual climbs for blueberry picking around Mt. Cheminis. This all help shape her like of salty, rustic outdoorsy characters. She had a deep love & connection with nature, animals & gardening. Her mother remarried when Dody was in elementary school to Phillip Beadman & relocated to the mining town of Timmins, Ont. In 1950 Dody graduated high school & enrolled in nursing school at Western University. She enjoyed the camaraderie of her dormitory friends while living in Brescia Hall. Nursing was a perfect profession & set her on a life-long path of service with appreciation for & the expression of human empathy. She moved to Montreal to intern at The Royal Victoria Hospital & thrived in her new career as a pediatric nurse. Her life evolved from career-minded to family-centered after meeting a charismatic young man & soon to be husband, Leonard Rosenberg. Putting her career goals aside she raised a family of three children. Dody was actively engaged in her children’s schools, the Aurora community & tirelessly supported her husband’s career as an independent businessman & accountant.
Dody is survived by her children Cyndy Skillins (nee Rosenberg) husband Peter, David/Jake Fry wife Beth Seaton & Richard (Ric) Fry wife Ghretta Hynd & grand daughters Kate Fry & Macy Fry. She also had close ties with her nieces & nephews, Kathy Robertson, John, Rob & Russ Henderson, Ryan Henderson, Bobbie Fry & Barbara Burger who all stayed close with her throughout their lives.
When her children grew up & left for university Dody started helping friends design & decorate their homes. This hobby turned into a full-time business after her divorce which she pursed into her 70’s. Dody lived a full life during these years. She built her own log cabin home with the help of her sons. She also enjoyed a few summer years on Bone Island, Georgian Bay in a small A-frame cottage she built. Filled with her love of gardening, animals & family gatherings, Dody poured her heart into her home creating a welcoming sanctuary.
Memories were a constant focus of Dody’s life. She loved family stories: Robert’s mining exploits, Ted’s career as Fire Chief in Toronto, her sister’s lifelong energy as well as all her nephews & nieces’ lives. It is with great irony that her last years deprived her of all memory. We, her children, would like to send sympathy & courage to all who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease. We have found this to be a cruel & heartless experience for our mom. We wish her & everyone else suffering likewise, some peace.
Dody is buried in the Aurora Cemetery aside her mom. In the Spring Dody’s favourite season the family hope to have a celebration of life.
