Obituary for Dorothy Irene Nicolson (Griener)

NICOLSON (nee Griener), Dorothy (Doris) Irene

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Doris passed away at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket on Monday, August 9, 2021. Predeceased by husband Murray and cherished mother of Jim and Peg, Heather and Robin, and Kirsten and Brad. Proud grandmother of Murray and Moira, and Rory and Alex and their partners Mariana and Bert, and great grandmother of newly born Wolf.

Born in, what she claimed was the centre of the universe, Timmins, Ontario, on July 14, 1931, to German immigrant parents, Josef and Beata. A doting, loving, and bossy big sister to Louise, Art, Cathy, and Joe.

A stellar student with a taste for adventure, Doris studied nursing at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Toronto, where she met her true soulmate and love of her life, Murray Nicolson.

Together they raised a loving family in Newmarket, in a home that always had an open door and a seat at the table. Known as “the house that butter built”, it was a place of parties, laughter, comfort, and sometimes tears.

Her nursing career was spent at Southlake Hospital (then known as York County Hospital), retiring as a nurse manager in 1995, having spread her compassion and caring to countless patients, families, and staff.

Retirement was spent cooking and caring for an extended group of family and friends. Doris had a sharp mind that helped several people through university at the dreaded dining room table where all editing occurred. She loved to stay abreast of current events and was an avid reader, but no one would dare interrupt her during her sudoku. That full beautiful smile just exuded her love. That warmth and generosity will be missed most of all.

She was the grand matriarch of her immediate and extended family, adopting all into her life. It broke her heart to think of people missing support in their lives. In light of this, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Covenant House, 20 Gerrard St., East, Toronto, Ontario, M5B 2P3. Visitation will be held at the Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home, 157 Main St., S., Newmarket on Friday, August 13th from 5-9 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held at St. John Chrysostom Church, 432 Ontario St., Newmarket on Saturday, August 14th at 10:30 a.m.
