Obituary for Elfriede Stronach

Elfriede STRONACH
It is with deep sadness that the Stronach family announces the passing of beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Elfriede. She passed away peacefully, after battling illness, at her home in Aurora, Ontario, on Monday, March 25, 2024, at the age of 80, surrounded by family. Elfriede leaves behind her husband of 60 years, Frank Stronach; daughter, Belinda Stronach; and son, Andrew Stronach. Lovingly known as Oma, she will be missed by her grandchildren, Frank Walker, Nicole Walker, and Selena Stronach. Born on June 1, 1943, in Gleisdorf, Austria, Elfriede immigrated to Canada after her marriage to Frank in 1964. From humble beginnings, she stood as Frank's unwavering partner as he built Magna International Inc. Elfriede took great pride in the accomplishments of her family, and especially in seeing her three grandchildren grow up on the farm in Aurora and go on to achieve their own successes. Never one for the spotlight, she was a figure in the community, dedicating her time and resources to support many causes. A private and gentle soul, Elfriede was happiest at home, gardening on her farm in Aurora with her beloved horses and dogs. She loved a warm beer, downhill skiing, opera music, baking strudel, and spending time with her family and close friends. With their shared passion and love for horses, Frank and Elfriede established Stronach Stables and the Adena Springs Farm breeding and stallion operation - breeding champion racehorses including 1997 Queen's Plate Champion, 1998 Breeders' Cup Classic Champion and richest-Canadian bred in history, Awesome Again, and 2004 Breeders' Cup Classic Champion and Horse of the Year, Ghostzapper, to name only a few. She was a breath of fresh air and a calming presence in the often competitive world of Thoroughbred racing. She loved the horses, but it was also her love for people that set her apart. She connected with people on a personal level, offering encouragement, wisdom, and sometimes just a sympathetic ear. Her life is a reminder of the power of kindness, compassion, and a listening ear in a world that often rushes by too quickly. In every interaction, Elfriede exuded a rare blend of grace and humility that instantly put others at ease. She will be missed. Special thanks to those who cared for her during her time of illness and in her last days. Your kindness will always be remembered. The Stronach family will be holding a private funeral and internment service. The family wishes to thank you in advance for respecting their privacy during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish to express sympathy, if desired, please consider a memorial donation to the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre at Southlake Regional Health Centre.
