E.W. (Al) Roeder

Passed away peacefully at Margaret Bahen Hospice, Newmarket, on Sunday May 29th, 2022 in his 99th year. Loving husband for 33 years of Erma (nee Young), beloved father of David (Arlene), Leslie (Ian Taylor), Judy (Martin Ford), Jeff (Peggy Sarge), Janet (Doug Woolridge) and Margaret (Doug Quick). Proud Grandfather of 6 grandchildren: Stephanie, Shayna, Chris, Leah, Laurel, Lynn, Nyomi and Cooper. Great-Grandfather of Lydia, Redford and Traycen.

Al was raised in western Canada, serving in the RCAF, Vancouver, during WWII. A graduate of UBC and U of T Hospital Administration, he was the first President of York County/Southlake Healthcare, taking it from a small hospital to major regional hospital. Accomplishments included U of T teaching, VP Ontario Hospital Association, College of Healthcare Execs, Hospital Accreditation, international healthcare research.

Volunteer with Newmarket Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, East Gwillimbury Library, Men’s Probus Club, Trinity United Church. Al was an avid gardener, antique car restorer, golfer and skier, racquet sports, activities he shared with Erma, the love of his life. They lived life to the fullest, exhibiting love for family and friends during celebrations at their Newmarket farm or later Ballantrae.

Celebration of Al Roeder’s life to occur from 2 - 4 p.m. on June 11th at Roadhouse & Rose, 157 Main Street, South, Newmarket L3Y-3Y9. Donations in lieu of flowers to Margaret Bahen Hospice or Southlake Regional Health Centre.
