Obituary for Gerald Thomas Hearty

HEARTY, Gerald Thomas of Newmarket, Ontario in his 85th year. It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our much loved husband and father on November 19th, 2021 at Southlake Hospital.

Devoted and faithful husband of 52 years to Gwenneth Anne (Wrinn). Loving father to Christopher (Mary Anne Battaglia), Jeffrey (Julie Dobson), Sarah (James Demarco), and Julie Anne (Mike McDonald). Proud grandfather of Kayla, Noelle, Owen, Michael, Quinn and Caitlin.

Survived by his sister Priscilla (Tony Landro) Long Island, NY, brother Delbert (late Phyllis McGee) Campbell’s Bay, Quebec, and sister Teresa (Lou Maykut) Barrhead, Alberta.
Predeceased by his parents Michael John and Mary Ellen, his brother Linus (late Helen Doyle), sisters Cecilia (late Roland Mulvey), Monica and Dora.

Gerald will be dearly missed and remembered by many nieces, nephews, friends and God children throughout Canada, United States and Australia.

Dad was born and raised in Vinton, Quebec on a small family farm. From a young age he was taught hard work and determination. Having never completed high school, Dad went on to be a licensed electrician. At the age of 26 he decided to pursue a university degree at St. Patrick’s College and Masters in Education at The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. Dad taught high school politics and history for 29 years at Huron Heights Secondary school in Newmarket. He was a lifelong learner who at the age of 73 earned a diploma in Ministry from St. Francis Xavier University. Dad was an incredible inspiration to many in their faith journey. He cherished his role as the Lay Director for the Toronto Archdiocesan Cursillio Movement. Dad knew Mom his whole life as they grew up on neighbouring farms. They married in 1969 and moved to Newmarket in 1971, where they raised their family and developed life long friendships, through St. John Chrysostom Parish, the Cursillio Movement, the Knights of Columbus, community events and Ferndale Crescent.

Dad always looked forward to former colleague Lockie MacPherson’s weekly visits. We are deeply grateful to Dr. Peter Anglin and the nurses at the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre at Southlake and the wonderful staff at Southlake Residential Care Village for their care and compassion. If desired, memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent De Paul or the Community Bread at St. John Chrysostom Church.

The family will receive friends and family on Sunday, November 28th, 2021 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m, Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home 157 Main Street South
