Obituary for Gordon Raymond Horton

Ray Horton
(Gordon Raymond Horton)

April 20, 1951 – March 7, 2021

Slipped away peacefully on Sunday, March 7, 2021, after a stroke in December 2020. Loving husband of Dianne Travell. Dear brother-in-law of Warren (Lynn Tipping), Chris, and Cath, and loving uncle to Ian and Luke. Beloved son of the late Gordon and Phyllis Horton of Willowdale.

Ray will be remembered and loved for his restless intelligence, his acerbic wit, and his kind and generous nature.

Following fun-filled undergraduate studies at Glendon College, Ray plunged into a lifelong commitment to public service with Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada and later Industry Canada. Along the way, he earned an MBA at York, graduating on the Dean’s List.

A passion for Formula One racing ignited by his brothers-in-law took him first to Montreal and later, to races in Germany, Monaco, and France. Those trips inspired further European and US adventures. There were many places remaining on his bucket list, but Ray has entrusted those to friends and family.

In recent years, Ray spent as much time as possible at his beloved Haliburton cottage, where he read voraciously and cheerfully entertained ducks, herons, chipmunks, flying squirrels, and the odd deer. He repurposed the term "timeshares" to refer to the mice that are the winter inhabitants. Ray was a true lover of all animals and treated his dogs as his children.

Cremation has taken place. A family celebration of Ray’s life will be held at a later date.
