Obituary for Hans Joachim Werner Paetzold

Paetzold, Hans - January 14, 1932 - January 3, 2022 - Hans Paetzold passed away peacefully, in his 90th year, at Sunnyside Home in Kitchener. Dear husband of Donna Paetzold (1994). Beloved father of Jennifer and her husband Jim Woolley of New Dundee, Tracey Paetzold and her husband Steve Kinnari of Carleton Place and Jeff Paetzold of Beaverton. Proud and loving Opa of Erich (Erin) Woolley, Rachel (Devin) Swanson, Jessica and Christopher Kinnari and Ally Paetzold.

Hans immigrated to Canada from Berlin, Germany in 1953. After working out west in Saskatoon, he settled in Toronto and began working for Eaton’s where he met Donna Shaw. They married in 1964 and raised their three children in and around the outskirts of Toronto, moving to Newmarket in 1975. Hans taught his children to swim and to skate and nourished their love of the outdoors and nature. He was a dedicated and loving father, from the days that he would rock the baby in the cradle at night at the foot of their bed to the time spent traveling and driving during Jeff’s many years of playing hockey. After Donna passed in 1994, and grandchildren came into Hans’ life, he was a dedicated and loving Opa, following their interests and pursuits with pride and interest. Hans continued to learn and develop new interests in his senior years, buying a camera and computer for editing and producing many treasured photos of his outdoor walks, our family get-togethers and the animals at the Metro Toronto Zoo. He showed us how to grow older with vibrancy, vitality and love. He will be so very missed by all of us.

The family would like to thank Dr. George Heckman for the care and hope that he gave Hans in the last year. In addition, they are sincerely grateful to the staff on Pioneer Tower at Sunnyside Home in Kitchener for their kindness and the home that they gave to Hans during his short time there.

A private family funeral will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Roadhouse and Rose Funeral Home in Newmarket followed by interment at St. John’s Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations to Sunnyside Home in Kitchener or the Metro Toronto Zoo would be appreciated by the family.

For all those who are not able to join in person, the service will be live streamed.
