JENNINGS, Hersey Emma (nee Reid), 1930-2020

Passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on August 16, 2020 in the Southlake Regional Hospital, Newmarket, Ontario. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff for their care and support in her last weeks.

Hersey was energetic, industrious, hard-working and funny. An introvert at heart, nonetheless she delighted in the many friends and acquaintances she made over the 30 years she worked at the Kap Inn. She was a favourite among customers, many of whom would ask to be seated at one of her tables. She was proud to be from Kapuskasing, having lived there for 65 years.

Hersey was also generous and caring, values she learned growing up in Newfoundland. She remained close to her large, tight-knit family, never forgetting her roots. Intensely private, few people entered her close circle but one who did was Nora Foran. “Just like family”, each would say. To her own family, Hersey was a huge and enduring presence. She always will be.

Hersey will be greatly missed by her son Fred (Penny) and daughters Marylin Edwards (Keith), Susan Jennings, and Janet Russell; her siblings Margie Oram (Clyde) and Lloyd Reid (Blanche) of Newfoundland; sister-in-law Ruth Jennings; grandchildren Charles (Janice) and Robert (Sabina) who loved her rice pudding and mashed potatoes; Julie and Jason (Crystal); and great-grandson Laiken.

She was predeceased by her husband Herbert Jennings, parents John and Flora Reid, and siblings Kevin, Alwin, Eldred, Hilda, Selma and Lorraine.

A graveside service will be held in Bishop’s Falls, Newfoundland. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Southlake Foundation (Southlake Regional Health Centre) or to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Hersey will always have a special place in my heart. She was there, with her family, from the beginning as our next door neighbour on Dallyn Street in Kapuskasing. Hersey made the best mashed potatoes and would be quick to pull up the highchair for me to join in. She did a beautiful job of turning my curly hair into ringlets and there was no one like her at taking care of a skinned knee. Then, there was the lovely pearl necklace for my confirmation, the trip by bus to be at my wedding, the carefully chosen Christmas cards, willingness to look after my dog, and delight in sharing Christmas dinner with us over recent years. Hersey always treated me and my family with love and kindness and for that I will always be grateful.
Our hearts go out to Hersey's family; from Canada's east coast to west coast .

Sympathies to the Jennings family and friends of Hersey. I knew Hersey for quite a awhile and so did my hubby Dave! She was a waitress at the Kap Inn while he was a young engineer working for Spruce Falls and living at the Kap Inn! I knew Hersey from Tim Hortons where sometimes we would meet and have coffee with the gang! RIP my friend!

I’m so sorry to hear about Mrs. Jennings. I was very lucky to have met her through my best friend growing up and I’ve known her for about 48 years. Wow. She took Janet and I on a trip to Newfoundland when we were in grade 9. I’ll never forget all the wonderful hospitality and kindness she always showed me. She was always interested in what I was doing and what I was saying. She was a hard worker and she was very conscientious. She was curious too and I think that was part of her Newfoundland charm. She was a big influence in Janet’s life and mine... I’ll miss seeing her. I can still hear her talking in my mind.... as if it was yesterday! Please know my condolences and prayers are with all of you... my deepest sympathies to all the family. Xo

We were deeply saddened to hear of Hersey's passing. We have many fond and loving memories of her and we will miss her trips to Newfoundland. When she could no longer come home, we travelled to see her and will always remember our visits to spend Christmas and her birthday with her and Janet and Susan in Newmarket. We will forever treasure those precious memories. Rest in peace, sweet sister.
Your loving brother, Lloyd, and sister-in-law, Blanche.

Dear Jan,
Our thoughts are with you during this very sad time. I have fond memories of Hersey (I feel like I knew her most of my life) from Kap and then also from Newmarket. I will miss hearing her laugh when I phone. I hope that the memories you have will provide you comfort in the coming days and know that you are always in our hearts.
With love from Gail, David, Alexis, Paige and Matthew xxx

Dear Susan, Marilyn, Janet and Fred, you are in our thoughts as you pass through this difficult time of saying goodbye to your mother. Hersey's material life was a loving one, and her eternal life shall be the same. We were and are all the better for having her in our lives. Compassion and love from Dianne and Robin Saunders.💖
