Obituary for Ian Laing

Passed away peacefully at home in Holland Landing on Thursday November 30th, 2023, at 71 years of age.
Born in Scotland, he moved with his parents to Canada at the age of 4. He grew up in Atikokan, Ontario and joined Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services in 1975. There he progressed through the ranks and devoted over 34 years of service prior to becoming the Fire Chief of Central York Fire Services in 2010.
He was also the Community Emergency Management Coordinator for the Towns of Newmarket and Aurora until 2016, at which time he was appointed Regional Fire Co-ordinator for York Region by the provincial Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management.
Ian leaves behind a legacy of 48 dedicated years of his life to the Fire Service, forging an incredible mark on the communities he served and those he worked with.
He was the loving husband of Deborah, father of Kyle (Erin) and proud grandfather of Payton and Ethan.
Visitation will be a private family event. Funeral services will be held at Ray Twinney Recreation Complex, 100 Eagle Street West, Newmarket on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at 1 p.m. Public attending the funeral are encouraged to arrive at the arena by 12:45 p.m. (or earlier) through the secondary entrance on Alex Doner Drive (between Crossland Gate and Kirby Crescent/Brimson Drive). Auxiliary police will direct attendees into the building.
