Obituary for Joan Catherine MacDonald (Quinn)

MacDONALD, Joan Catherine (nee Quinn) October 29, 1933 – March 20, 2021
With tremendous sadness and broken hearts, the family announce the passing of Joan MacDonald at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, on March 20, 2021, in her 87th year.

Beloved wife of Murray for 67 years. Loved and adored by her seven children: Bryan (Debbie), Dennis (Joanne), Brenda (John), Maureen (Bruce), Lori (Brent), Ian (Carol), and Tom. Proud grandmother of seven grandchildren: Jamie (Jennifer), Jason, Matt, Aimee, Christopher, Blair and Colin; great grandmother of four: Kiera, Sheileigh, Harrison and Jackson. Loving sister of Mary (Bill), Maureen (John) and the late Pat (Mike). Survived by sister-in-law Jeanne Winter (Grant, deceased). Dear daughter of the late Joseph and Audrey Quinn.

Joan was born and raised in Newmarket and graduated from Newmarket High School. Joan began working as a customer service representative with Bell Canada, but her life-long career was raising her seven children with Murray. Joan loved her family, and her family was her life. She was a fabulous cook having many of her recipes published in the Toronto Star. She could work miracles with three-quarters of a pound of round to feed nine. The many years the kids played organized sports kept Joan and Murray very busy indeed. Never obtaining a driver’s license did not stop Joan from attending any event. Joan would be sitting in the stands cheering and knitting various items for family and friends. As the nest emptied, Joan returned to the workforce joining Sears where she made many life-long dear friends. Murray and Joan enjoyed many annual trips to Maresol in Barbados, and the summers at their “Erzan Myne” cottage on Clear Lake, her two favourite places in the world. Joan loved music, especially “One Day at a Time” by Roger Whittaker.

Special thanks to the caring and compassionate staff and management at Southlake Residential Care Village during the past four years.

Cremation has taken place. In accordance with COVID-19 restrictions, a private family graveside burial will take place at St. John’s Cemetery at a later date, with Father Miro officiating.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
