WILKS, Joan Laura (nee Barkway)
Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023 at 94 years of age. Loving wife of Fred for 52 years. Beloved mother of Marilyn Schwering (Nick), Donna (Mark Sadgrove), and Carol Barrett (John). Loving grandmother of Mike (Miranda), Phil, Kim (Allan), Karen, Andrew, Jason (Jill), and Jennifer (Dave). Great-grandmother of James, Clara, Adaline and Owen. Sister of Ronald Barkway (Carol) and the late Percy. Daughter of the late Albert and Mabel Barkway. Dear friend of June.
Joan grew up on Muriel Avenue in East York. She married Fred on Valentine’s Day in 1948. Joan was Fred’s partner in Wilks Home Hardware on Victoria Park Avenue for over 25 years. The family cottage on Chemong Lake was dear to her heart and the place where cherished memories were made with family and friends.
Joan loved many creative outlets including rug hooking, hand stitchery and knitting for her grandchildren. She loved antiques and had an avid interest in Canadian history and politics.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Roadhouse and Rose Funeral Home, 157 Main St. S., Newmarket, on Wednesday, January 11, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
