Obituary for Leslie Melville Smith

Leslie Melville Smith
February 6, 1928 - April 28, 2021

Les began his working career as a journalist, and after covering several beats, was given his own column with the London Free Press. Although he relished the creativity of this work, he moved his young family to Ottawa in 1958 to start a second career with the Government of Canada in communications - not as creative, but more stable for his family. It was a sign of his character, to put his family first.

Les was a gentle man - soft spoken with rarely a negative word to say about anyone. He loved to travel, was a natural athlete who enjoyed playing golf and curling, a great listener, genuinely interested in others - a skill he passed to both of his daughters. He was an avid reader and a storyteller, turning his gift of words to the spoken, more than written form. He loved classical music, art, travelling - in short, life! He will be missed by all who knew him.
