Obituary for Michael James Shields

Passed away peacefully at Southlake Regional Health Centre, Newmarket, on July 29, 2021 at the age of 78. Loving husband of Jean. They recently celebrated 55 years of marriage. Beloved father of Tim (Rachel) and Laurie. Doting grandfather of Thomas James and Veronica. Brother of Ordella (James) Day, Debbie Payne, Cathy Derouin, David Derouin and the late Robert. Son of the late John and Mary Shields (O’Brien). Son-in-law of Lillian Sayant (McEvoy) and the late Archie Sayant. Brother-in-law of Cheryl Petersen (Harry Corrin), Alice Sayant (Scott Baldwin) and the late Howard and Bruce. Fond uncle of numerous nieces and nephews. Michael was a career civil servant for 29 years and after retirement worked as head ice maker for York Curling Club. He was a competitive curler for 50+ years. For many years Mike was a volunteer driver for the Canadian Cancer Society, and volunteered at both the St. Elizabeth Seton Church and Newmarket Minor Softball Association. A visitation will be held at Roadhouse and Rose Funeral Home, 157 Main Street South, Newmarket on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 from 7-9 p.m. A visitation is also scheduled at the St. Elizabeth Seton Church on Thursday, August 5, 2021 from 10:30 a.m. – 12 noon, followed by a Memorial Mass. Attendance numbers at the church will be a maximum of 100. A Celebration of Life for Mike will be held in the Ottawa area in late August. Details to follow at a later date.
