Obituary for Michael Peter Varcoe

Michael Peter Varcoe
March 18th, 1937 – December 19th, 2020

Sadly, Michael passed away unexpectedly and peacefully at Southlake Regional Health Centre. He is survived by his wife, Beverley and his daughters and granddaughters: Elizabeth (Mike & Stella) and Laura (Ryan & Esme). He loved his family most of all but his granddaughters were the light of his life. He was fondly known as Popee. He also loved sailing, skiing, woodworking, history, reading and was a man of many talents. He was a long-time member of National Yacht Club, NOTSA-National Yacht Club Old Timers Association, Past President of the Probus Club of Aurora, 25-year member of the Optimist Club of Aurora, member of the Aurora Legion, Aurora Seniors Association and the Newmarket Seniors Meeting Place. He was a partner at Couchman Trade Bindery for twenty-six years and then a real estate agent at Royal LePage in Aurora for the next fifteen years.

Michael was a talented woodworker. He built a 31-foot boat, lamps, furniture, etc. but was most famous for his beautiful wooden bowls. He spent months working on each project and hours turning the bowls on a lathe. Gifting his bowls to others brought him great joy.

Michael had multiple heath issues but with help we were managing to keep him home this year. He was admitted to Southlake hospital with a kidney infection and put-on antibiotics. Unfortunately, there was an outbreak of Covid-19 at the hospital and Michael caught the virus. He was not strong enough to fight it and only lasted three days. The doctors and nurses did all they could. I am grateful they are still willing to go to work at the hospital with such difficult conditions.

Michael will be interred at Bowmanville Cemetery with a family service in the spring. He will be buried along with many Varcoe’s at this old cemetery including his parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.

Thank you to all our family and friends who have been so caring and kind during this difficult time. As much as you can prepare it is still so difficult when the end finally happens. Rest in Peace our dear Michael. We love you. xxxx
