Born July, 21, 1932, in Arnprior, Ontario.Daughter of Alma (nee Maschke) and Arthur Allan August Schultz. Survived by her daughter, Sara, and son-in-law, Bernard Van Der Stichele.Nayda lived her early life Waterloo where she began a long and successful academic career. In 1954, she graduated top of her undergraduate class, taking Honours in English and the gold medal in Latin. In 1959,she received her Masters in English and Medieval Literature from the University of Toronto. In 1960, she entered a doctorate program in AngloSaxon and Medieval Literature at Brown University. In 1962, she was appointed full-time lecturing professor of English at Waterloo College. In 1970, Nayda took a full time faculty job at Cambrian College in Sudbury and continued her tenure there for 26 years, until she retired as Professor Emeritus in 1996. More than any academic role, Nayda treasured her role as a single mother to her daughter,Sara, born in 1966. When Sara was a child, Naydathrew children’s parties for the neighbourhood on every occasion. She learned to make cakes in the shape of Valentine’s hearts, Easter bunnies, and scary Hallowe’en pumpkins; taught children’s games to all who came; and revelled in the happy faces and fun. As Sara grew up, Nayda passed on her wonderful skill at baking, cooking and gardening, as well as how her more professional ones of studying, writing and teaching. With Sara, Nayda also rescued countless homeless animals and built a rapport with vets and rescue agencies. In doing so, she fostered a deep appreciation of compassion in her daughter and all who got to know the family home, which was usually stuffed with cats. Nayda was a dedicated and loving mother whose daily calls are acutely missed.Throughout her life, Nayda gathered a wide and wonderful circle of friends. In the Lutheran church, in her academic studies, in her community, she welcomed people into her life and maintained ties which lasted decades. She was curious about people, wanted to stay in touch with them, wanted all good things for them. For her family and for her friends, she became a bellwether: the keeper of dates;the sender of gifts, notes, and cards for every occasion;the regular telephone call that turned into an hour long chat. Finally, Nayda was also a patron of the arts. Any early fan of the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, Nayda loved to go out to the theatre and connect with friends over dinner afterward. She also adored travelling cross country with her partner of 24 years, Melville Flynn, to see new festivals and shows. We will miss her bright smile, her enthusiasm, and her gift for conversation.
