Obituary for Rick Koury

KOURY, Richard John – Passed away peacefully at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket on Sunday August 8th, 2021 at the age of 71.

Loving partner of Lynn and her son Ryan for 12 years.

Beloved father of Erin (Shawn) and John (Fatema) and their mother Joan.

Survived by brothers Larry (Murielle) and Bob (Dace).

Dear son of the late Alex and Mary Koury.

Predeceased by uncles William (Sophie), Nick (Alba), Henry and nephew Harley.

Rick was born in Kirkland Lake and gained his education in Radio and Television Broadcasting. Soon after, he realized his love for animals which led him into a 28 year career with the Ontario SPCA where he rose to Deputy Executive Director.

Throughout his life, his passion for theatre and the performing arts had him involved in countless stage productions with many different theatre groups. He spent 10 years as the President of the Newmarket Theatre Centre (now Newmarket Stage Company). In 1996, Rick achieved his dream of getting “his own” theatre when he was hired as Theatre Coordinator at the Newmarket Theatre (now NewRoads Performing Arts Centre). Rick spent 22 years at the helm of the Newmarket Theatre until his retirement in 2020.

In 2006, Rick joined the York Regional Police Auxiliary. There was no one more proud to put on the uniform and serve the community than Rick was. He could be found at dozens of community events directing traffic, patrolling by bike, driving the vintage police cars or simply assisting with whatever was asked of him. He loved being out in the community and valued each and every connection he made with people.

Special thanks to the caring staff at Southlake, especially those in the CICU.
