Obituary for Ronald McGill Stevenson

It is with great sadness that we share the peaceful passing of Ronald McGill Stevenson on March 30th at Southlake Regional Health Center in Newmarket. He was 75.

Ron was married to Pat (nee Patricia Clark) for 49 years. Together they experienced joy by welcoming their daughters Lisa (Adam) and Kelly (Jeff). His love of family grew as a foster parent and Ron and Pat’s family was complete when Mandy and Cynthia joined them in 1987. Ron also became a very proud Grandpa to Emily, Claire, and Hudson.

Ron was the son of the late John Edwin Stevenson and Eva Ruth Stevenson (nee Burley), and brother to the late Robert (Bob) Stevenson (Laurene). He was Uncle Ron to Susan, Andrea and Erica.

Ron’s life was so rich with experiences in his professional life, his commitment to serving the community, his enjoyment of photography and in his ‘happy place’ – the family cottage on Browning Island, Lake Muskoka, where Ron and Pat were constantly surrounded by their children, grandchildren and countless friends over the past 40 years.

Professionally, Ron started with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1969, followed by his MBA from the University of Western Ontario in 1971. He achieved his Chartered Accountant designation in 1973, while working with Price Waterhouse. Ron then served as the CFO for Kawneer Company Canada Ltd. for 25 years.

With the goal of education equity and quality for every child, Ron served as a York Region District School Board Trustee for 12 years. He was also actively involved with the Newmarket Prostate Cancer Support Group and the Browning Island Cottagers’ Association.

In more recent years, Ron renewed his passion for photography by joining the Richmond Hill Camera Club, and over the last decade, Ron and Pat were able to enjoy snowless winters by venturing to Marco Island, Florida where they made many wonderful new friends.

Ron will be remembered for his warmth, kind heart, generous nature, infectious smile, love of people and his incredibly quirky sense of humour.

Ron’s family wishes to say thank you to the staff in the Palliative Care Unit at Southlake for their wonderful care, especially Dr. Kassam.

A private funeral service will be held in the coming days. If desired, memorial donations may be made to Southlake Regional Health Centre, The Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre, or a charity of your choosing.

“My sweet Ron, I will miss you always and you will forever be in our hearts.” - Pat, Lisa, Adam, Kelly, Jeff, Mandy, Cynthia, Emily, Claire, Hudson and your loving dog Gracie.
