Obituary for Marie Doan

Shirley Marie Doan
Thursday July 19, 1928 - Tuesday November 1st, 2022.

Passed away peacefully with her son and daughter by her side at Alexander Muir Retirement Home in Newmarket on Tuesday November 1st.

Loving wife of George Calvin Doan (deceased) for 68 years. Beloved mother of Timothy (Faye) Teresa (pre-deceased 1963), Sandra (Joseph). Proud grandmother of Tobias, Wesley and Estrella. Sister of Dave (Dorothy), William (Muriel). Daughter of the late Lewis and Pearl Rollings (nee Kydd) of Queensville. Marie will be fondly remembered by her family and friends.

Marie enjoyed her independence during her training for nursing at Wellesley Hospital, her years of service as an RN and Public Health Nurse in Newmarket and York Region.

While devoted to her family, Marie was an early trailblazer in life-work balance, working full-time as a professional while raising a family and helping support the family farm, at a time when it challenged traditional values. When she came home at night we asked her (only partly joking) “How many lives did you save today?” Her daily anecdotes reflected the widest scope of patient care imaginable, as a delivery room nurse in hospital and more recently on home visits throughout the region.

Marie’s passion for spinning, dying wool and knitting was a product of both her practical upbringing and her great capacity for learning. Through her life she enjoyed travelling with Cal, antiquing, and painting. Her romance with Cal was unwavering through all ups and downs. In his later years Marie was his devoted companion. The life they shared was full of joy and adventure.

Special thanks to Newmarket Quaker Meeting, where Marie kept close friendships and fellowship.

Marie will be forever missed and her memory cherished.
