Obituary for William McDonald

It is with great sadness that the family of William (Bill) McDonald announce his passing on Monday, March 29, 2021, peacefully at home, surrounded by his wife and daughters, one day shy of his 77th birthday.

Born in Buckie, Scotland in 1944, Bill immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1966, where he met and married Linda Jarrell. They lived in Toronto, Aurora, Hanover, and finally set down roots in Newmarket where they lived in the same house for 42 years.

Bill is survived by Linda, his loving wife of 50 years, daughters Suzanne (Mark Cece) and Heather (Dale Marsden). Bill’s memory will live on for many years through his grandchildren, Noah, Claire, Ellis, Mac, Vera and Dean.

Bill will be forever remembered by his family in Scotland including his sister Helen Milne, nieces Sandra (Neil McGrath), Christine (Tom Iglehart) and nephew Alan (Polly Birse), as well as cousins, great nieces and nephews, and friends.

Bill will be sadly missed by his “Canadian” family: brothers-in-law Michael Jarrell and Stephen Jarrell, sisters-in-law Elizabeth Jarrell, Cathy Cahill, and Mary Jarrell, niece Laura Cahill (Matthew Didier), nephew Cameron Cahill (Sandrine Laporte), great niece and nephews and, countless McAvoy and Jarrell cousins.

Bill will be welcomed in heaven by his parents, Robina (nee Moar) and Alexander McDonald, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Hanorah (nee McAvoy) and Edmund Jarrell, brother-in-law, Stuart Milne, and a lifetime of friends who have passed before him.

Funeral Mass will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, April 6 at St. Elizabeth Seton Roman Catholic Church. In-person attendance is by invitation, due to reduced capacity. The Mass will be live-streamed on the church’s Facebook page (St. Elizabeth Seton Parish, Newmarket, Ontario).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s name to In From The Cold and the Newmarket Food Pantry.

The family wishes to thank the Southlake Hospital Palliative Team, the doctors, nurses and therapists of Providence Health Care, nurses from Bayshore Home Health, the LHIN, and the compassionate Personal Support Workers who have helped Bill over the past few years.
