The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Tobias van Dalen can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Christopher Van-Lane

When I first met Mr. Van Dalen, he was my teacher. It was September 1989 when I began an OAC French course under his instruction, in my final year of high school. It was a challenging but enjoyable course. Mr. Van Dalen was a tough but fair marker. Over that year, I grew to respect him more and more, and by the end of it, I regarded him as a mentor and friend. It was not until I was living in Newmarket that I came across Mr. Van Dalen again. My mother, Dorothy Van-Lane, began singing in the senior choir at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in March 2006. Mr. Van Dalen, who sang tenor, was her colleague and fellow chorister. By that time, we all called him simply "Toob." It was heartbreaking to see the once robust Toob be physically taken apart by Parkinson's disease, but his spirit was still very much there. When I first ran into him at St. Andrew's, he recognized me immediately and warmly. No longer my instructor then, he was simply my friend. Until my mother retired from the choir in 2015, I saw him frequently at St. Andrew's. I mourn his passing today. Toob, you were a wonderful teacher and friend. I will miss you. I thank God you are in a better place, and no longer suffering. I thank God for bringing you into my life. We will see each other again in Heaven. Au revoir, M. Van Dalen. God Bless.
