Best thoughts

For my part, I think the best way to remember Carol, and deal with her death, is by following how she said she dealt with our Father's death. Dad died in 1996. I distinctly remember Carol saying she would honor his death by striving to do something great. Before this disease ruined her body and brain, Carol was the Vice President, Finance & Administration of the Toronto Community Foundation. She also volunteered. What could be a better thing to do than the old cliche, "help people"? This is what Carol found to be the best thing in life, after going through any numbr of different ideologies.

What's really inspirational to me is how Carol overcame obstacles ad thought things out. She wasn't always successful. There were many aspects of Carol. At one point she was a hippie, at another point too hard on herself for her own good. At one time she felt going to church was foolish. The last time we visited, she made sure we went to church. She didn't have much luck in her first major job working in a blood bank. So she changed careers to business, and was successful. That drove home to me another old cliche, "never give up".

But Carol was more to me than just a career person. I remember her as a big sister. I mentioned how she checked up on me from time to time. She also invited me up to Canada to spend a week. We hadn't had much contact for a long time, and she said she wanted to get to know me again. These are the kinds of things that stick in my mind about her.
