We've had such fun and laughs on our visits to Newmarket or when Rita would hop a plane the past few years and spend some time coming or going to Island Harbour.
Her life was not easy but she'd shrug her shoulders and day "that's it" or wave her hand and say "never mind that" and carry on with her smile and laugh.
With 10 sons she made bread almost every day and often twice a day. As they grew up, each boy assumed choirs and jobs. They helped supervise the younger brothers, cut or brought in wood, depending on how old they were and fished or provided in some way when they could. With their father working away most times, he was a 'single mom' while "our Daddy" was gone.
My favorite story is when her father was going to Fogo and asked if she needed anything. She asked for 25 panes of glass. She'd laugh everytime she told me there was only one pane left by the time she mended all the windows the boys had broken.
I hear great stories and have heard more details each time of growing up in Island Harbour with Leo playing with 100 children in the garden. They were all his brother or first cousin, therefore she was Mother or Aunt to the gang of them. She's worked so hard and now can rest peacefully.
