Although it was very early on in his career its obvious that Joseph was an astoundingly gifted geologist. He demonstrated an advanced understanding in mapping techniques, mining operations and geological systems. Throughout his university career Joseph mentored numerous classmates and was subsequently elected as undergraduate Class president in his final year of study.

With the hopes of inspiring and encouraging the next generation of outstanding geologists a scholarship fund in Josephs name is being introduced at the university of Toronto Earth Science Department. The "Joseph Michael Housam Memorial Leadership Award" will be presented to a student that demonstrates outstanding leadership qualities.
