Baba Sangster

I met Stew in 73. He was the last of my wife's siblings that I met. I remember saying to her, "Oh My God there is another Sangster out there, how many more are there"?

My memories include the house parties on Hodgson, those Thursday night bowling nights, and the adventures and some misadventures at Sauble Beach in the 70s and 80s. Why does the moving of his outhouse down the backroads of Sauble Beach  from his cottage to his in-laws' cottage come to mind. Several liquid beverages were involved but the outhouse I think is still standing today.

I got to know Stew more closely during our eight or nine golf trips to Florida plus our spring 3-day golf trips to Collingwood/Orillia and our 3-day golf trips to Niagara Falls in the fall. Yes, we made it to Orillia this past May. Our usual foursome included Al Horbatiuk,  Mario, Stew, and I. When Mario could not make the Florida trip, my buddy Bill Edward and then John Melville joined us.

I won't describe what happened on our trips because what happens in Florida stays in Florida. For those who were there I am sure the following will bring back some hilarious memories: Burger King in the Winn-Dixie Mall (that was fastest I ever saw Stew run), Broke Butt Mountain, the Larry Cable Guy video, and Stewie's Tree to name a few. If you need to hear the details contact any us.

Okay, I will share the details behind Stewie's Tree which is a  palm tree standing 40-50 feet tall on the 12th fairway at the Lakeside Golf and Country Club in Inverness, Florida.  Al had just fed the gators some golf balls on the 11th hole by placing 3 or 4 balls into a pond where the gators resided even though he was trying to avoid the pond. We were splitting a gut watching him trying to miss the pond. On the very next hole Stew was teeing off and hit his ball well up into a tall palm tree and his ball never came down. Hence we called it Stewie's Tree.  Every year thereafter we tried to match Stew's effort but never came close. If I ever return to Lakeside, I plan to carve Stew's name into the tree.

Stew also earned the nickname of Baba Sangster after the professional golfer Baba Watson. Watson is known for hitting a ball around a tree at an angle of almost 90 degrees and I actually saw Stew do it too.

Thanks for the memories and good times Stew.

See ya later Baba
