Obituary

Patrick Cochrane Wood Greaves
April 17, 1926-July 7, 2020

Patrick Greaves passed peacefully at home July 7, surrounded by loving family after months of bone marrow failure in his 95th year.

He is survived by his brother, Kevin; his five children, Frank, Judy, Gerald, Linda and Laura; and nephew Charles. Grandchildren: Parris, Tessa and Brianna; Dennis and Michael; Jessica and Joel; Bradley and Jeffrey. Great grandchildren Sterling; James, Mary and Rose; Aleta and Sandro; Alexandra, Dominic and Anthony; Chloe and Oliver.

Patrick was born and grew up in St. Phillip, Barbados, trained in Medicine in London, England and Toronto before settling in Newmarket in 1955, practicing general medicine then anaesthesia full time after fellowship training in Toronto, until 1990. His deep commitment to his life’s work in medicine was apparent to those who knew him.

He was a devoted husband to Audrey (d.2010), and committed father to 5 active and energetic children. He enjoyed cottage life in Haliburton for over 60 years and was an enthusiastic gardener, naturalist and reader, especially of British and Barbadian history. He spent many hours playing backgammon with friends and family.

No ceremony planned at this time because of the Covid restrictions. A celebration of his life will be announced later.

I would like to extend condolences on behalf of the McClintock family. Our fathers came to Newmarket at the same time and developed their medical careers together at York County Hospital (Southlake). Back in the 1960's the two families were inseparable. I hope life has been good to you all. Take care .God bless. Regards Ian McClintock and family. White Rock BC.

Pat and Audrey were very kind to us when we emigrated to Canada in 1971 and John became an associate at York County Hospital. We remember with gratitude many fun times at their cottage with their children and enjoyed wonderful hospitality. We both admired Pat professionally. He was instrumental in building a modern Anaesthetic department and Intensive Care Unit at York County, now Southlake. We express our deep sympathy to all the family.
