Life Story for Peter Vander Werf

Vander Werf, Peter (Nov. 14, 1919 – Sept. 19, 2009) - Surrounded by his six daughters, with his wife by his side, dad passed peacefully at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket at the age of 89. Loving husband of 55 years to Dinie. Beloved father (Pappy) to Betsy, Tieneka, Trudy (Gord), Anita (George), Audrie, Hetty (Pete). Proud Grandfather (Opa) to Piet (Emily), Monica, Patrick, Christopher (Melissa), Kyle, Benjamin, Jesse, Nicholas, Elise, Hannah, Avery, Becka, Megan, Athan, Cecilia. Great Opa to baby Dinie. Predeceased by sisters Adrie, Trees, Tine, Monie and brother Reints (of Netherlands), and brothers Tjipke (of London, ON), and Dick (of Wallaceburg, ON). Survived by sisters Trude, Ida, Agatha, Lies, and brother Dominicas (of Netherlands). Son of late Boukje and Sible VanderWerf. Peter came to Canada in 1948. In addition to receiving numerous awards from Landscape Ontario during his gardening career in Toronto, he was the designer of the Toronto Island Maze in 1967 which is still enjoyed by many today. After retiring to Newmarket in 1983, Peter became an active member of the Newmarket Lion’s Club and Young at Heart, and began developing his new love of painting landscapes. As a member of SOYRA, his paintings could often be seen in various places around Newmarket including the Newmarket and Sharon Town Halls. His gentle guidance, unconditional love, wit and sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be at Saint Elizabeth Seaton Church in Newmarket one hour prior to the funeral mass on Tuesday September 22, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. Special thanks to the nurses in both the Stroke and Neurological Unit and the Palliative Care Unit at Southlake Regional Health Centre.
