Barbara Isabel Wittmer (née Fraughton)

Passed away peacefully on Friday, November 8, 2019 at the Margaret Bahen Hospice in Newmarket. Born on February 14, 1936 in Quinan, Nova Scotia she moved to Halifax and then later to Toronto where she met and married Anton Wittmer in 1955. Together they raised three children, Lynn (Henry 2008), Wayne (Elizabeth) and Janet, in a busy, loving household.

Eventually Barbara and Anton moved to Aurora. With time she amazingly taught herself to speak German, as many of Anton’s family visited frequently. Barbara enjoyed playing duplicate bridge and over the years she shared her love of the game as she patiently taught many friends and family members to play as well. As a family they all enjoyed cottaging over many years at Stormy Lake in the Haliburton Highlands. Barbara loved to walk with her dog Keisha, swim, cook and play Scrabble. She loved to win with a big score! Barbara found great joy in sharing cottage life with her grandchildren Rebecca(Mitch), David(Phoebe), Emily(Aaron) and Jared (Eilidh) who all cherish wonderful memories of time spent with Grandma and Grandpa at the cottage. In recent years she was delighted to welcome three great grandchildren Tommy, Alex and Claire to the family.

A funeral mass will be held on Thursday November 14, 2019 at 10 a.m. at the Our Lady of Grace Church, Aurora in the Lynett Hall. The Hall is located at the Yonge Street and Catherine Ave Entrance. Reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Margaret Bahen Hospice would be sincerely appreciated. We will never forget the kindness and caring that the staff there extended to our entire family. Online donations may be made to

Uncle Tony, Lynn, Janet and Wayne: Our deepest condolences for the recent loss of Aunt Barb. Distance has kept our families apart but memories don't fade and Ruth has spoken of her dear sister each time we have seen her so that we felt we kept in touch in a way.

Dear Tony, Lynn, Janet and Wayne,

We are so sad for your great loss. Barb has been such a great friend though all the years we've known her. We've shared so many family times and special events: weddings, funerals, fun times at the cottage, playing bridge and sharing meals. We could talk about anything. Barb had a beautiful smile and an infectious laugh. She made everyone feel at ease and at home. Her love of family was paramount and sustained her though life's ups and downs. She was so proud of her kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Be assured that Barb is with Jesus in heaven and will be smiling down on all of you as that angel on your shoulder, looking out for you and praying for you. In her spare time, I'm sure Barb and Bud will be looking for 2 more bridge players to enjoy the game we all loved. My thoughts will be with you all on Thursday.
Love and prayers,
Joan and the Brioux Family
